Wireless | Industrial wireless communication

 

The INTERFACE product range of wireless signal transmission systems from Phoenix Contact can be used for easy and safe wireless transmission of analog and digital signals or serial data.

The most important prerequistie for the use of wireless technologies in industrial applications is that they function just as resiliently and reliably in the harsh conditions as a cable connection. With wireless communication, the data is transmitted by means of electromagnetic waves through free space that is not available exclusively. This is the reason why the wireless connection is affected by interfernece such as electromagnetic interference fields, which can have a negative effect on the transmission. It is also possible for reflections, fading, interference and shadowing to occur. 

Despite the influences described, Bluetooth, Trusted Wireless and WLAN 802.00 are interference-free thanks to their particular metjod of operation. Comprehensive practical tests are proof of this.

Depending on the requirements, various wireless technologies are available:-
 
 
 

Trusted Wireless is a wireless technology developed specially for industrial applications. The FHSS procedure is used for sequence spread and guarantees a high degree of immunity to interference. Trusted Wireless is characterized by the following features:
-  Long range* typ. up to 3km
- Cyclic transmission of small time-uncritical signal packets
- High locak system density of several hundred networks
- Can be operated parallel to WLAN 802.11 abd Bluetooth systems without interfernce
- Wireless paths are simple to set up
- Good diagnostics options

     
 
  With Bluetooth, which also operates on the FHSS principle, it is possible to set up local wireless networks with up to seven devices. Due to different application profiles, the standard is flexible and can be used for a variety of tasks. its features includes:
- Range* typ. up to 100m in industrial halls and up to 200 m outdoors
- Cyclic and fast transmission of small data packets
- High local system density. i.e. interference-free parallel operation of many Bluetooth networkds possible
- Interference-free parallel operation of WLAN 802.11 networks
- High data security due to 128-bit data encoding and device authentication.
     
 
  On a WLAN basis, it is possible to set up powerful wireless networks with numerous devices. In orde to suppress interference, the DSSS procedure is implemented. Since WLAN systems integrate well in IT networks, they are ideal for mobile operating and monitoring, as well as collecting data. Protocol-transparent transmission allows communication with mobile controllers. Firther strengths includes:
- Range* typ. up to 100m in industrial halls and up to 200 m outdoors
- High data rate of up to 54 Mbps gross (approx. 25 Mnps net)
- High mobility due to automatic roaming network with several hundred access points.
     
 
  GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) is an open system for mobile communication. One of the strengths of the technology is its international expansion with standardized connections in more than 200 countries. The four frequencies 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 1900 MHz are used for this worldwide. GSM features are:
- No range limitations
- Invoice based on time volume
- Data rates up to 14.4 kbps.

GRPS (General Packet Radio Service) also uses the GSM telephone network for exchanging small data packets. The TCP/IP-based GPRS connection offers the following advantages here:
- Constant connection, t.e. the dial-in operation is omitted
- Invoicing as per data volume
- Data rates up to 85.6 kbps.

     
 
  System extensions and post installation

In process engineering systems, it is often only possible to collect data from sensors at great effort since the distance to be covered is so extensive or the terrain inaccessible. Furthermore, the communication infrstructure is often missing in operations such as the cement industry, water supply and distribution facilities and electric power companies, in order to include additional devices in the context of expansion measures.

Since the systems have grown over the course of decades, problems are often due to old cables. The use of Wireless IOand Wireless Serial makes it possible to avoid expensive cable installation and failures as well as high mintenance costs.

     
 
  Temporary installations

Many industrial applications require electrical installations only for a acertain time, since they are temporary and/or mobile. The particular infrastructure therefore often has to be dismantled and installed again. If data is transmitted from sensors and automation devices by means of cables, this costs a great deal of time and money. And the constand unplugging of the electrical contacts and plugging them in again leads to a higher rate of wear and consequently possibly to malfunctions. Wireless transmission with Wireless IO and Wireless Serial significantly contributes to cutting expenses.
     
 
  Mobile operation, monitoring and programming

If you wish to put a large machine or plant into operation or if you have to carry out maintenance work on it, you will often wish you could move about freely from function unit to function unit without that annoying cable. In particular factory automation is characterized by machine parts that are in constant motion. The best example are robots which are used in all industrial sectors for processing products. But what moves, also wears faster so that you have to include the corresponding replacement part costs and downtimes in your calculation. High mobility is the absolute basic requirement for facilities in conveying engineering, such as automated guided vehicle systems, since they have to be able to react flexibily to the particular situation. Wireless IO, Wireless Serial and Wireless Ethernet guarantee fast and inexpensive wireless communication in such cases.

Wireless IO - Transmission of I/O signals 
When it's about the wireless transmission of analog and digital signals, then the wireless IO is the right choice. The wireless IO systems are optimized for the cyclical transmission of small amounts of data. They can be used both in the process technology environment and in control engineering.

With Wireless IO, analog and digital signals are transmitted without a single cable. The following systems are available depending on the application:

Wireless Serial - Serial data transmission 
With Wireless Serial, you can exploit the advantages of a wireless data connection and communicate comfortably and flexibly via the RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485 interfaces of the communication modules and the mobile system parts. Additional modems allow remote worldwide system monitoring in connection with public GSM telephone networks.

For the wireless transmission of signals for the serial interface, the following product lines are offered:

- RAD-Line Serial for the transmission of the RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485 serial interfaces on a Trusted Wireless basis with up to 254 network devices 
- PSI-Line Serial for the transmission of the RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485 serial interfaces on a Bluetooth basis to flexibly changing communication modules 
- PSI-Modem-Line for worldwide remote maintenance of machines and plants on the basis of GSM networks and GPRS connections.

Wireless Ethernet - Transmission in Ethernet networks 
Wireless Ethernet allows wireless network communication via WLAN 802.11 and Bluetooth, all IP and Layer-2 Ethernet protocols, such as TCP/IP, Modbus TCP or Profinet, can be transmitted. The Wireless Ethernet systems are characterized by their short and constant delay times.

In order to link mobile devices into the Ethernet network or to create more freedom of movement, the following product lines are used:

- Factory Line Bluetooth for setting up numerous parallel wireless systems with a low data rate
- Factory Line WLAN for connecting numerous devices in a large network with a high data rate
